Possession as defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary is the act of having or taking into control. In this context, Possession is believed by some to be the process by which individuals are possessed by malevolent preternatural beings, commonly referred to as demons or devils. Fiction and horror films depicts this unusual situation as demonic possession and is acted on by exorcism which the viewers find fascinating especially when the film is dubbed “Based on the true story.” Possession is not only shown in films, it is also one of the most widely-held religious belief in the world. Most religions claim that demonic possession is possible and offer exorcism to remedy this. One of its example is the Bible which shows Jesus’ six instances in casting out demons. According to Radford (2013), The idea that invading spirits are inherently evil is largely a Judeo-Christian concept. Spiritualism, a religion that was born in America taught that death is an illusion and that spirits can possess humans. Other religions even embraced the concept of channeling which is defined as a form of possession which spirits of the dead inhabit a medium’s body, may it be books, symphonies, etc. Possession is considered to be one of the dissociative process which is defined as “The splitting off of certain mental processes from the main body of consciousness with various degrees of autonomy.” (Hilgard, 1992) in Hilgard’s Ritual healing Theory. This dissociative process created different beliefs that formed different practices and ways in dealing with such situation. Exorcism defined as the religious or spiritual practice of evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person, or an area, that are believed to be possessed is one of the practice created by religion because of this dissociative process. Even religion itself was created because of the different dissociative process.
